Chester boxers aim to bring title days back to the walled city
For the last three years, Boxrec News has followed the rise of the Chester boxing scene. We have watched the once barren wasteland become a hot bed for young, local talent. Still, there is one thing missing from this journey – a title.
October 15th however, sees championship boxing come to Chester for the first time since the heady days of Paul Lloyd.
Paul Economides (12-2) (pictured) challenges old foe Shaun Doherty (3-5-3) of Bradford for the Yorkshire scrapper’s International Masters title at super-bantam.
After two wins for the Chester man over the current champ, he will be confident of gaining his first title. Doherty however, feels that he was robbed on at least one occasion and will be looking to set the record straight. After beating heavily fancied Matthew Edmonds for the title he will be in no mind to be giving it away easily.
Chris Goodwin (12-1-1), also of the walled city will get his first taste of title action when he squares off against Geoffrey Munika (21-16-2) of Kenya for the latter’s International Masters lightweight title. The much-travelled 37 year-old African shot to prominence when he stopped former English champion and British title challenger Ryan Barrett for this title in June in six rounds. Goodwin will hope to have the skills to beat his machine like opponent, but will he have to be at the top of his game to win that title.
The show will also see a couple of debutants from Tom Doran’s Connahs Quay gym. We will be meeting these men over the next few weeks and, of course, will be covering the show itself.
