Paul Economides fights on Saturday December 3rd at the York Hall Bethnal Green
Fast on the heels of stable-mate Chris Goodwin winning his second International Masters title last weekend, Chester’s very own ‘Spartan’ Paul Economides (11-2) will contest his second belt when he faces off with Ghana’s former Commonwealth title challenger Isaac ‘Messiah’ Nettey (14-8-1 7KO) for the vacant International Masters super-bantamweight strap. The fight, promoted by Goodwin Main Events, will take place on Saturday December 3rd at the spiritual home of British boxing, the York Hall Bethnal Green and will constitute a massive step up in class for the Chester warrior.
Nettey is well know to British fans having taken former world title challenger Rendall Munroe the distance in his Commonwealth title challenge back in May 2009 and will be more than confident of taking the belt home with him this time round. He also comes with a real hard man reputation having never been stopped in his nine year career.
For Economides this is a really big opportunity. Having suffered the disappointment of losing his Welsh title challenge against Robbie Turley in February, he rebounded to win the British Masters super-bantamweight title in October when he dethroned Shaun Doherty of Bradford in a candidate for fight of the year. Now he can end 2011 having won two belts, something even his biggest fans would never have expected earlier this year. For Economides it has been a real roller-coaster ride.
“I have been waiting for that first title for so long, now I can get two inside two months. I have to thank my promoters ‘Fight Options’ for getting me those opportunities and I’m gonna repay them by bringing that belt home.”
Despite his usual confidence, Economides is in no way looking past his African opponent.
“He must be good since he went the distance with Munroe. Plus he is fit as he went 12 the same night I won the title against Doherty. He is going to be a big test.”
Despite having a real respect for this his foe, Economides realises this is a could lead onto bigger things.
“People know what I want, I want big to go on and win those bigger titles and I know I can do it. I am improving all the time and with Fight Options behind me I know I can get the chances if I go in prepared and fight to my best.”
The bill will also feature Ali Adams (12-3-1 4KO) in a ten rounder. The Iraqi-born Chelsea based heavyweight is making a real name for himself, after taking Matt Skelton the distance in ‘Prizefighter’ back in October 2010. Since then he has rebounded with three wins and will be looking to impress as he races towards a major title opportunity.
